NECC 2009

Camille and I have had the pleasure of spending the past five days in Washington, DC at the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC). This year marks a 30 year milestone for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in gathering together an international group of educators interested in the use of technology in education.

This year's theme, "Celebrating 30 Years of Ed Tech Vision" saw a wide variety of topics. Together with two of our colleagues from PA, Jamie Kasper from the PA Department of Education, and Leslie Gates from the University of Maryland, we launched a new special interest group for arts educators, SIGAE. Bringing together a diverse group of educators interested in the arts from across the nation, the group will move forward with a shared vision of leading ISTE in its identification of presentation topics which appropriately represent the full spectrum of the arts.

We had a chance to see keynotes by authors Malcolm Gladwell and Erin Grewell, and a debate lead by NPR's Peter Siegal. We took in art at the National Gallery, its sculpture garden, as well as a visit to the Holocaust Museum. We saw many presentations and poster sessions which focused on arts and arts integration through the use of technology. In the upcoming weeks, we'll be unpacking our bags and our digital files to begin to bring you some of our musings on the intersection between art and technology at the conference. Stay tuned!
